Scrumconnect collaborated with the Marine Management Organisation (MMO), sponsored by the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra), to develop a robust system for creating export catch certificates. This system was crucial for enabling UK fishermen to export their catches to EU countries post-Brexit, ensuring economic stability and compliance with new regulations.
The implementation of a new system for creating export catch certificates was essential due to Brexit, with the following key requirements:
We combined advanced data integration, seamless system design and rigorous security measures to deliver a robust, user-centric solution ahead of schedule.
To facilitate the creation of catch certificates, fishermen needed to log two key pieces of information: the species of fish, with data maintained by the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (CEFAS) including all common names, and vessel information, managed by various teams with dynamic licensing status. Scrumconnect ensured quick search capabilities by pulling and normalising these data sets to prevent any lag that could degrade the fish's value.
The front-end development used Node.js with React to create a seamless user interface that supports both JavaScript and non-JavaScript browsers. The back-end development was implemented with Java 8 and Spring Boot Service, handling data lookups in Azure Blob Storage for species and vessels, regularly updating species and vessel data, and pushing data issues to Azure Application Insights for real-time monitoring.
The system generated PDF certificates with QR codes for easy verification by border security officers, ensuring the authenticity and integrity of documents.
The solution was delivered ahead of the original Brexit deadline of March 31, 2019, with several key achievements. It provided an intuitive user experience, allowing beta users to quickly and easily generate certificates. The system featured efficient data handling by integrating Azure Application Insights for detailed monitoring and quick issue resolution. Additionally, it was designed for scalability and performance, handling stress tests well beyond the expected request volumes with ultra-efficiency.
We delivered a scalable, efficient system that transformed the fish export process, ensuring compliance and economic stability for UK fishermen.
Achieved a 95% reduction in manual certificate creation time, streamlining the export process.
Ensured 99.9% system uptime and an 80% improvement in data processing efficiency, maintaining continuous and efficient operations.
Guaranteed 100% compliance with post-Brexit export regulations, supporting economic stability for the fishing industry.
